Mr John Duthie

John Duthie qualified as a Dental Surgeon in 1974 and started his Foundation Training in Hypnosis in 1975. He further honed his hypnosis skills at the Liverpool Dental Hospital in the late 1980s and 1990’s treating medically compromised and nervous patients requiring general anaesthetic and sedation.

John used hypnosis as a tool to maximise the placebo effect and amplify the drug response to reduce complications and speed up treatment thus reducing waiting lists. Dr. Elvira Lang Elvira Lang, MD, FSIR, FSCEH.. a Former Associate Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School and researcher into hypnosis describes this approach as “Sedation without Medication”. She also wrote a book for patients called “Managing your Medical Experience” which Mr Duthie recommends to patients. On the academic side, John was an Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons, Faculty of General Dental Practice.

Now retired from clinical dental surgery, he continues as a tutor on the British Society for Clinical and Academic Hypnosis Foundation Course. He is assisting at The Abbey offering patients help with anxieties related to Medical and Dental Procedures. He has teamed up with Jack Bowker, also at The Abbey, to provide a service related to patients with ‘sleep’ problems as well as Sleep Apnoea and snoring.

Here, at The Abbey, he is hosting a postgraduate study group for Healthcare Professionals interested in the “Therapeutic Use of Hypnosis”.
